SEN Introduction

Dear Parents, Carers and Children,


As St Laurence’s Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo), I would like to welcome you to the 'Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND)' section of the St Laurence’s website.

SEND can be a very confusing and worrying aspect of education, but I would like to emphasise the following points to anyone who visits this part of our website:

1.     All staff at St Laurence’s CE school recognises every child’s right to a broad and balanced education, which gives them opportunity to realise their full potential and make progress.

2.    All staff at St Laurence’s CE school are committed to providing full access to the curriculum by ensuring high quality teaching and differentiation to meet individual needs and to address underachievement.

3.    All staff at St Laurence’s CE school believe in equality of opportunity and we aim to create a supportive, stimulating and challenging environment that values difference and recognises the achievements of all children.

4.    Where a pupil is identified as having additional educational needs all staff at St Laurence’s CE school will take action to remove those barriers to their learning and to work with their parents/carers as part of this approach.

I am very proud to be the SENCo of a school which cares so much for the needs of every child. This is something that is recognised not only by all the professionals who visit us from outside agencies, but is also recognised by parents and was acknowledged by OFSTED in our most recent school inspection:

"Skilled adults support disabled pupils and those who have special educational needs very effectively in lessons and smaller groups. Those pupils whose circumstances may have made them vulnerable receive high-quality care and support so that there are no barriers to their learning when they are in school. As a result, these pupils often make rapid progress to catch up with other pupils.”


"Disabled pupils, those who have special educational needs, those with minor and more complex learning difficulties and those pupils who are learning to speak English as an additional language make good progress. This is because well-trained staff help them with their learning in lessons and in small groups within and outside lessons.”


"Leaders have ensured that there are effective arrangements for providing pupils who are disabled, those who have special educational needs and those who are learning English as an additional language, with the extra help they need to do well. Careful checks are made on their progress to see that gaps are closed rapidly and no-one gets left behind.”


"The good behaviour is underpinned by a caring ethos. Staff provide excellent positive role models. Therefore pupils are friendly, well mannered and respectful. Everyone is included and there is no discrimination. Pupils who find school life difficult are given support so they can learn to understand and control their emotions, join in and learn well.”
