Intent

At, St. Laurence's, our intent for reading is to foster a lifelong love for reading, enabling all pupils to become confident, enthusiastic, and independent readers. We believe that reading is the cornerstone of academic achievement and personal development, providing access to knowledge, cultural experiences, and enhancing well-being. Our intent is to create a positive reading culture that supports the holistic development of every child.

Implementation

To meet the needs of our early readers, we use the DfE validated Unlocking Letters and Sounds phonics programme. The Unlocking Letters and Sound website shows sample resources and lessons if you'd like to find out more.

Impact

Our reading provision prepares pupils for future success by equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to access the wider curriculum and lifelong learning. They are knowledgeable about a wide range of authors, genres, and cultures, promoting tolerance, empathy, and understanding. Reading contributes to their personal development, enhancing their creativity, resilience, and emotional well-being. It lays the foundation for their academic achievements, opening doors to further education.
