English - Writing
Our Approach to Writing
At our school, we teach writing through a clear and consistent approach that helps children become confident, fluent and expressive writers. Writing develops through both transcription (spelling and handwriting) and composition (ideas, structure, purpose), and we ensure children build strong foundations in both.
How We Teach Writing
Writing is taught through high-quality texts and experiences that inspire children to write.
Lessons follow a sequence of immersion → skill teaching → planning → writing → editing.
Vocabulary, sentence work and discussion play a central role in preparing children to write.
Skills are revisited, practised and applied across the curriculum.
Spelling
We teach spelling systematically through Unlocking Letters and Sounds, supported by our school’s Spelling Routeway.
Each year group follows a mapped progression of spelling rules and reviews their spelling tracker regularly.
Common Exception Words
Handwriting
We use Nelson (Oxford Owl) to teach handwriting. Children learn correct letter formation, spacing and line awareness before moving on to fluent joined handwriting.
Supporting All Pupils
Teachers use modelling, scaffolding, vocabulary support and structured talk to help every pupil succeed in writing. Targeted support is provided where needed.
