English
In English, we have started the term using Paddington stories to develop our narrative writing. We are currently reading Paddington at the Palace and will be writing our own diary entry as Paddington! During the rest of the term, we will be writing a range of genres including non-chronological reports and recount writing.
The children need to continue reading their home reading books at home, but they must be brought into school every day so that they are in school if we hear your child read. In Year 2 we will continue to change the books on a Friday. To support your child’s reading at home we ask that you spend 10 minutes a night reading with them. Spend one evening where you read the book to your child, the second night your child should read the books and the third night should be asking and answering questions about the book. If the children come across any new vocabulary, please make a note of it in their reading diaries so we can celebrate unfamiliar words in class.
Maths
In Maths, we will be working on our place value knowledge. In Year 2 we will be learning the 2-, 5-, 10- and 3-times tables. In Year 2 there is a great emphasis on children using reasoning to show their maths knowledge so this will be a focus also. Any extra learning that the children can do at home to help them learn their tables would be beneficial. Please try to spend time regularly practising these multiplication tables with your child and the division facts that go alongside. You can use TT Rockstars or any of the links below. Your child's TTRS login can be found on the front of their reading diary.
Science
Our Science learning in the first half term is Healthy Humans. Later in the term, we will be learning all about materials! In both topics we will be carrying out investigations.
History and Geography
Our Unit for this term is Let's Explore London. The first half term sees us focusing on the city of London and the physical and human features of London by using our geographical skills. We will then move onto History where we will be looking at the history of London as we study The Great Fire of London and the importance of people such as Sir Christopher Wren and Samuel Pepys.
