Year 2

Welcome to Year 2

The teachers in year 2 are Miss Austin, Mrs Duggan and Mrs Gough and the teaching assistant is Mrs Halder.

You may also see Mrs Tuxford, Mrs Prewitt and Mrs Guest.

English

In English, we have started the term using Paddington stories to develop our narrative writing. We will be writing our own Paddington stories to share with you.  During the rest of the term, we will be writing a range of genres including non-chronological reports, setting description, a letter in role and recount writing.

The children need to continue reading their home reading books at home, but they must be brought into school every day so that they are in school if we hear your child read. In Year 2 we will continue to change the books on a Tuesday. To support your child’s reading at home we ask that you spend 10 minutes a night reading with them. Spend one evening where you read the book to your child, the second night your child should read the books and the third night should be asking and answering questions about the book. If the children come across any new vocabulary, please make a note of it in their reading diaries so we can celebrate unfamiliar words in class.

Spellings are sent home on a Monday for the children to learn. Children can practise their spellings using the games set on Purple Mash.

Maths

In Maths, we will be working on multiplication and division, time, shape and measurements. In Year 2 we will continue learning the 2-, 5-, 10- and 3-times tables. In Year 2 there is a great emphasis on children using reasoning to show their maths knowledge so this will be a focus also. Any extra learning that the children can do at home to help them learn their tables would be beneficial. Please try to spend time regularly practising these multiplication tables with your child and the division facts that go alongside. You can use TT Rockstars or any of the links below.

Science

Our Science learning in the first half term is exploring materials.  Later in the term, we will be learning all about plants.  In both topics we will be carrying out investigations.

Topic

Our Topic for this term is London.  The first half term sees us focusing on the city of London.  We will then move onto looking at the history of London as we study The Great Fire of London.  We will be answering the following Key Questions:

What is the United Kingdom? (countries, capital cities) 

What is London like? (physical and human features) 

What special places are there to visit in London? e.g. London Eye, Buckingham Palace, Natural History Museum Wembley Stadium etc. 

What happened in 1666? 

How do we know about the Great Fire? 

How did it start and how did it spread? 

Can I design and make a replica Tudor house? 

Can I make a collage of the Great Fire?

Religious Education

Our Religious Education lessons are focusing on the Gospels and the good news that Jesus brings. After half term, we will be learning about Judaism and The Easter Story.
