Music
Aims of the music curriculum at St Laurence’s:
- To expose our pupils to a range of musical styles
- To encourage pupils to develop a love of music, both in and out of the classroom
- To celebrate music from a range of countries and communities
- To create music and become more musical
Curriculum Overview
The music curriculum has been designed to immerse the pupils musically through the 5 key disciplines of music, as outlined by the National Curriculum:
Throughout the academic year, pupils will immerse themselves in the development of musical skills, dedicating focused practice to singing, playing instruments, and composing within the framework of specific music styles. The diverse range of musical styles presented to the pupils will enable them to explore music from various historical and geographical origins, offering a rich context for teaching the interconnected dimensions of music.
The music curriculum is designed to contribute to personal development by fostering pupils' self-esteem and self-confidence. This is achieved through a variety of performance opportunities, engaging in problem-solving and teamwork activities, and providing space for self-reflection and expression of their identity.
Other core elements of the music curriculum include:
Visits from local musicians
Workshops
Attending professional concerts
Rock Steady rock band tuition
These exciting opportunities aim to maximise cultural capital and expose children to a range of new experiences.
If you have any questions or need further information about our music curriculum, please feel free to contact the music lead teacher via the school office.
